BMP applications now being accepted

- BRYNN JONES Brynn Jones, PAG, Agriculture Programs Specialist, Prince Albert Saskatchewan Agriculture

The Resilient Agricultural Landscapes Program (RALP) supports Saskatchewan producers by offering funding for a variety of best management practices (BMPS). BMP adoption leads to increased water quality, soil health and biodiversity on agricultural land.

One BMP under RALP is the Extensive Wintering Site Management BMP.

An extensive wintering site is a field setting where animals are fed or sheltered through the winter-feeding period. This allows the nutrients (manure) to be disbursed over a larger area so that when spring arrives, risk associated with manure run off have been mitigated.

Aside from the benefits to soil and water quality, having an extensive wintering site also supports animal health and lowers the cost of production.

Producers who are eligible to access funding for this BMP may receive up to 60 per cent of their costs for eligible items to a maximum of $50,000. Eligible items include windbreaks, fencing, permanent or portable loadout facilities and cost of trees and grass seed.

Producers must work with their ministry agri-environmental specialist to develop and submit an extensive wintering site plan and have it pre-approved prior to starting the project to be eligible for the program. A ministry specialist may complete a pre- or post-bmp implementation site visit to confirm changes are in accordance with the extensive wintering site plan.

The application deadline for pre-approval is December 31, 2027, with projects completed by March 31, 2028. All claims for rebates must be received by March 31, 2028. Our agriculture programs specialists are available to assist you with your application process and our agrienvironmental specialists are happy to help you with the technical details of your project.
