Broncos win twice against Central Division rivals

The Swift Current Broncos won twice in three attempts within the Central Division last week.

Wednesday, the Broncos trailed three times before defeating the host Calgary Hitmen 6-5.

Caleb Wyrostok scored twice and Rylan Gould assisted on four goals as his breakout season continued. Van Eger scored while shorthande­d, Ryan Mccleary scored an unassisted goal, and Grayson Burzynski notched a power play goal in the third period to tie the game 5-5. Brady Birnie scored the winning goal with 1:09 remaining in regulation.

Joey Rocha made 34 saves in the win. Alex Garrett took the loss with 36 saves on 42 shots.

Friday, the Broncos lost 5-3 when the host Lethbridge Hurricanes scored on their first four power play opportunit­ies.

Wyrostok, Connor Hvidston, and Josh Filmon all scored in the loss.

The game was tied 3-3 after two periods before Logan Mccutcheon and Trae Wilke scored for the home team. Cooper Gizowski, Miguel Marques, and Leo Braillard also

scored for the Hurricanes.

Joey Rocha took the loss with 24 saves.

Saturday, the Broncos won the rematch 3-1 against the visiting Hurricanes.

The Broncos took the lead 7:01 into regulation when Luke Mistelbach­er found a loose puck in the slot and deposited his fourth goal of the season. The Broncos doubled the lead late in the second period when Mistelbach­er one-timed a centering feed home on the rush for his second of the game.

The Hurricanes took advantage of a turnover to cut into the lead 4:09 into the third period with a Logan Wormald goal.the Broncos sealed the game with an empty net goal from Hvidston.

Matthew Kieper made 20 saves to improve to 3-0-1-1 for the Broncos. Brady Smith took the loss with 22 saves.

The Broncos improved to 15-12-1-2.

The Broncos will head into the holiday break with three Alberta road games this weekend, beginning Friday in Red Deer. They also visit the Edmonton Oil Kings on Saturday and the Hitmen again on Sunday.

Bronco Bits: Thirdyear forward Rylan Gould leads the team with 30 points, 22 assists, and a +11 rating in 29 games this season after registerin­g 17 points in his first 130 WHL games.
