Legionnaires take over top spot in SMAAAHL after weekend sweep
The Swift Current Home Hardware Legionnaires won both of their home games during a busy week in the Saskatchewan Male AAA Hockey League.
Tuesday, the Legionnaires lost 6-5 in a shootout to the host Regina Pat Canadians in a showdown for top spot.
Jace Egland got the Legionnaires on the board with his 19th goal of the season 5:45 into regulation. Dayce Derkatch tied the game late in the first period.
The Legionnaires broke the game open in the second period with goals from Keegan Nash, Kayd Ruedig, and Triston Mitchell-mcelhone for a 4-1 lead.
Things unraveled in the third period when Steven Steranka, Ryan Ulmer, Casey Brown, and Michael
Donavon scored for the Pat Canadians, while Kade Stringer replied for the visitors.
Parker Rondeau scored in the shootout, while Steranka and Ellis Mieyette countered for Regina.
Will Kirwan, Ruedig, Sam Kirwan, and Mason Fauser all added assists for the Legionnaires. Berney Weston made 36 saves in the loss.
Saturday, the Legionnaires scored four goals in the third period to
defeat the visiting Battlefords Stars 7-5. Weston made 33 saves in the win.
Egland led the Legionnaires with two goals and one assist. Rondeau and Ruedig each added a goal and two assists, while Sam Kirwan finished
with three assists.
Fauser registered one goal and one assist, while Stringer scored the other goal. Cameron Soulsby added one assist.
Sunday, the Legionnaires completed the weekend sweep with a 6-2 win behind a 33-save performance from Jacob Morris.
The Legionnaires scored twice in each period, led by two goals and one assist each from Mitchell-mcelhone and Stringer. Keegan Nash and Fauser also scored. Ruedig registered two assists, followed by singles from Connor Rieger, Rondeau, Mason Osinski, and Egland.
The Legionnaires finished the weekend in first place with a 17-5-3 record.
The Legionnaires will attend the Circle K Classic in Calgary over the holidays. They will open the tournament on Dec. 27 against the Yale Lions before facing the Calgary Buffaloes and Detroit.
