Broncos stretch winning streak to four games

The Swift Current Broncos, bolstered by the arrival of trade acquisitio­n Conor Geekie, won both games last week,

They defeated the visiting Tricity Americans 6-2 on Tuesday for their third straight win.

The Broncos got on the board 9:45 in with a Rylan Gould power play goal. Geekie scored his first goal with the Broncos late in the opening period as he collected a puck in the slot and buried his 21st goal of the season.

The Americans fought back with second-period goals from Nick Anisimovic­z and Parker Bell to tie the game. Connor Hvidston converted a rebound chance to put the Broncos back in the lead with his 17th goal.

Caleb Wyrostok doubled the lead 5:54 into the third period with a shot from the slot for his 13th goal of the season. The

Broncos added to the lead with a Clarke Caswell shorthande­d goal, followed by a power play goal from Josh Filmon.

Joey Rocha improved to 8-9-1-1 with 32 saves for the Broncos. Eric Kahl took the loss with 35 saves in his first WHL start.

Friday, the Broncos scored six unanswered goals to defeat the host Brandon Wheat Kings 7-3 for their fourth straight win. Geekie led the way with four points during his second game.

The Broncos trailed 3-1 in the second period before Hvidston scored twice to get the comeback underway. Zach Turner scored late in the second period against his former team to give the Broncos their first lead.

Ty Coupland, Geekie, and Luke Mistelbach­er all scored in the third period. Brady Birnie had scored in the opening period to tie the game 1-1 during a threepoint outing.

Roger Mcqueen, Brett Hyland, and Hayden Wheddon scored for Brandon.

Reid Dyck made 20 saves as he improved to 8-4-0-0 in his first game since Nov. 14.

Carson Bjarnason made 23 saves on 27 shots over 40 minutes in the loss. Ethan Eskit allowed three goals on 13 shots over the final period for Brandon.

The Broncos finished the weekend in fifth in the Eastern Conference with a 22-15-2-2 record.

The Broncos will host the Moose Jaw Warriors on Friday and then visit the Warriors on Saturday. The Broncos have a 2-1-0-0 record against Moose Jaw this season, led by five points apiece from Filmon and Mistelbach­er.

Bronco Bits: the Broncos scored 28 goals during their four-game winning streak. Trade deadline acquisitio­n Tyson Galloway made his Broncos debut in Brandon with one shot on goal and a plus-two rating.
