Dyck leads Broncos to a pair of shutout victories

Reid Dyck led the Swift Current Broncos to a pair of shutout wins last week as the team collected five of a possible six points.

Wednesday, the Broncos ended a four-game losing streak in resounding fashion with a 6-0 win over the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes. Josh Filmon scored twice and Dyck earned the shutout with 28 saves to lead the Broncos to their first win in 19 days.

The Broncos came out flying in the first period and were rewarded with goals from Filmon, Connor Gabriel, and Connor Hvidston. Conor Geekie and Petr Pavelec scored in the second period before Filmon closed the scoring in the final frame.

Harrison Meneghin fell to 21-13-2-0 with seven saves on 10 shots over one period of work for the Hurricanes. Brady Smith made 22 saves on 24 shots over 40 minutes of relief work.

Friday, Dyck earned his second straight shutout as the Broncos defeated the host Regina Pats 3-0.

Dyck made 26 saves to improve to 11-6-1-0 for the Broncos with his fourth career WHL shutout.

Zach Turner, Clarke Caswell, and Ty Coupland all scored for the Broncos.

Saturday, the Broncos power play and overtime woes continued as they lost 5-4 to the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings.

Rylan Gould scored twice for the Broncos, while Caswell and Filmon also tallied.

Brandon earned the extra point in overtime after possessing the puck for two full minutes until Nolan Flamand split three Broncos and scored on the backhand.

Joey Rocha made nine saves on 12 shots over the opening two periods for the Broncos. Dyck played the final 22 minutes and made 10 saves on 12 shots.

The Broncos fell to 2418-4-2 as their two-game winning streak came to an end, while Brandon improved to 24-18-5-1. The Broncos fell to 1-4 in games decided in overtime this season.

The Broncos finished zero-for-seven on the power play as the unit ranked second worst in the WHL at 18.8 percent. They finished Saturday’s game without a power play goal on 32 consecutiv­e opportunit­ies.

The Broncos will continue the five-game home stand on Friday when they host the Edmonton Oil Kings. The Broncos won the only previous meeting 6-3. Edmonton was last in the Eastern Conference with a 16-282-1 record.

The Broncos will also host the WHL leading

Saskatoon Blades on Saturday. The Blades led the Western Hockey League with 77 points in 50 games this season. The Broncos have lost all three games in the season series so far.

The Broncos will have another meeting with the Hurricanes on Wednesday when they celebrate Valentine’s Day with their eighth head-to-head meeting of the season. The Broncos have a 3-40-0 record in the season series. Hvidston leads the Broncos with five goals and eight points against the Hurricanes.

Bradyn Edwards and Miguel Marques led the Hurricanes with 10 points each against the Broncos. Dinsmore’s Joe Arntsen could be playing his final WHL game in Swift Current where he spent much of his minor hockey career. The 6’3’’ overage defenseman had 17 points in 45 games for Lethbridge.
