Broncos neutralize Tigers to stretch winning streak to six games

The Swift Current Broncos added to their season-high winning streak with a pair of victories over the Central Division leading Medicine Hat Tigers over the weekend.

Friday, the Broncos were dominant in a 4-1 win over the visiting Tigers for their fifth straight win.

The Broncos opened the scoring in the first period with a Luke Mistelbach­er power play goal on a wrist shot from the right face-off dot, his 13th goal of the season.

The Broncos doubled the lead in the second period when Conor Geekie scored a shorthande­d penalty shot goal, his 33rd goal of the season. Mistelbach­er added to the lead three minutes later with a breakaway goal, roofed off the backhand.

Mrsic power play goal in the third period, but Josh Filmon restored the three-goal margin with his 24th goal minutes later.

Reid Dyck made 20 saves to improve to 186-2-0 for the Broncos. Ethan Mccallum made 27 saves to fall to 10–71-0.

Saturday, the Broncos added a 4-3 overtime win in Medicine Hat to stretch the winning streak to six games.

Conner Hvidston was the overtime hero with his 24th goal of the season.

Geekie, Mathew Ward, and Mistelbach­er also scored in regulation. Dyck made 29 saves in the win.

Gavin Mckenna, Nate Corbet, and Hunter St. Martin replied for the Tigers. Zach Zahara took the loss with 33 saves.

The Broncos pulled within three points of the Tigers for the Central Division lead with a 3219-4-2 record, fourth in the Eastern Conference overall.

The Broncos are on the road this weekend to visit the Red Deer Rebels on Friday and the Edmonton Oil Kings on Saturday.

The Rebels sat fifth in the Eastern Conference, only four points back of the Broncos after 57 games. The Broncos have a 1-1-1-0 record in the season series, led by four points from Rylan Gould. Geekie had three points in his only game against the Rebels this season.

Kai Uchacz leads the Rebels with four goals, while Shaunavon’s Kalan Lind has four points in the season series as well.

The Broncos will also host the Oil Kings on Wednesday. The Oil Kings were last in the conference with 21 wins in 57 games. The Broncos are 2-0 in the season series with 10 goals for and four against. Filmon leads the Broncos with four points, while Geekie scored twice in his only game against Edmonton.

The Steinbach, MB product had six goals and four assists during a five-game point streak. The second-year Bronco now has 15 goals and 22 assists in 53 games after totalling 16 points in 56 games in his rookie season. The Broncos, riding a season-high six-game winning streak, will visit the Red Deer Rebels and Edmonton Oil Kings this weekend. They will also host the Oil Kings on Wednesday.
