Southwest Sask. pop-up art exhibition from Val Marie artist makes a stop in Swift Current

-

On April 2, two southwest success stories begin a collaboration that will bring to Swift Current an exciting new series of pop-up art exhibitions by Saskatchewan professional artists. Catherine Macaulay: Solo, paintings in watercolour, launches the adventure, opening April 2 to May 4. You can meet the artist on April 6, from 2-4 p.m.

Gift shop and boutique store With Love Collective, the home of Made Cafe featuring Flatlands Foods, is the location for these visual arts shows. With less than two years operation behind them, the shop and cafe at 2150 Walker Street have already built up an impressive following.

Grasslands Gallery Online, the exhibition program’s visual arts partner and Saskatchewan’s only fully online professional commercial gallery, is based at a kitchen table near a bright window in Val Marie. Just one year older than the exhibition host location, the gallery has a clientele found from Canada and the United States to Europe.

“The gallery normally offers its artists’ works only on the internet”, said gallery owner/curator Laureen Marchand, herself an artist,

“but the light and space at the shop and cafe, and the opportunity to create something new in the city, felt too good for all of us to pass up.”

Artist Catherine Macaulay, the first exhibition’s focus, was born and raised on a farm in southwest Saskatchewan.

After living across Canada and in Scotland, she came home to her acreage just outside Val Marie.

Whether Catherine is travelling to gather material or meditating on the Grasslands outside her home and studio window, her great understanding of her chosen watercolours and a lifelong commitment to really seeing have led to a rich and extensive body of work. Catherine Macaulay has exhibited both nationally and internationally, and her intently focused watercolours are held in major private and public collections across Canada and overseas.

As Laureen Marchand said, “People sometimes think of watercolours as almost faded and watery. Catherine Macaulay’s paintings are nothing like that.

They’re vibrant, strong, and truly beautiful. We’re really excited to open this collaboration with her artwork.”
