Nutrition month in Sask. provides the opportunity to help build healthy lifestyles

-

Nutrition Month is celebrated every March to highlight the importance of good nutrition to our overall health and well-being. Agriculture in the Classroom Saskatchewan (AITC-SK) is featuring a unique resource that brings the worlds of agriculture literacy and superheroes together to teach students about nutrition.

Mission: Super-human is an educational game like no other. Students assume the role of scientists who are tasked with defeating villains who want to control the world’s food system, and encourage misinformation and unhealthy eating. To defeat these villains, students learn about important nutrients, reading food labels, and making healthy meal plans. The game’s concept is exciting and engaging for students while teaching them essential knowledge about good nutrition.

“Nutrition is a critical piece in the school curriculum and more importantly in the lives of our students,” says Sara Shymko, Executive Director of AITC-SK. “With this resource, young people gain the knowledge and skills to make healthy food choices. It was developed in a way that will capture student’s attention, but also provide vital knowledge that will benefit them beyond the classroom.”

Mission: Super-human has received positive feedback from teachers, helping to connect nutrition, health, and agriculture with the school curriculum. The resource would not be possible without the generous support of Viterra.

“We’re pleased to support this important educational initiative, which provides knowledge that will enable students to make sound nutritional choices today and well into the future,” said Kyle Jeworski, CEO for Viterra Canada. “At Viterra, we believe that agricultural literacy is essential to understanding where our food comes from, and being grateful for the high quality food ingredients that our farmers produce each year.”

Mission: Super-human is developed to meet curricular outcomes for Grades 6 and 7 classrooms. Teachers can access the resource, and many other educational resources, for free by visiting AITC-SK’S website.
