The contribution of the tourism industry to the local and provincial economy was highlighted during the proclamation of April 15-19 as Tourism Awareness Week by the City of Swift Current.

Tourism Swift Current CEO Rebecca Anderson made a presentation in support of the proclamation at a regular City council meeting, April 1.

She noted that Saskatchewan Tourism Week is a recognition and celebration of the dynamic tourism landscape in the province and it coincides with the national celebration of Tourism Week in Canada.

Saskatchewan Tourism Week is a reminder of the significant impact of tourism on the provincial economy. The industry generates over $2.4 billion in annual travel spending and nearly 71,000 Saskatchewan residents are employed in this sector.

“Tourism stands as a cornerstone of our prosperity, driving economic growth, creating jobs and enhancing our quality of life,” she said. “As we embark on this year’s celebration, let us pay tribute to the dedicated tourism businesses and operators whose tireless efforts animate our visitor economy from the bustling streets of Swift Current to the picturesque landscapes beyond. Their commitment to showcasing the essence of Saskatchewan enriches our communities and fosters a sense of pride among residents.”

She added that Tourism Week is an opportunity to encourage Saskatchewan residents to go on new adventures and discover a variety of experiences in the province.

“Whether it’s embarking on a road trip through our picturesque province, sampling diverse culinary delights, or immersing oneself in unique cultural experiences, let us embrace the spirit of exploration and discovery that sets Saskatchewan apart from other destinations,” she said.

Anderson spoke about the various tourism events and attractions in Swift Current, which are indicative of the community engagement and economic vitality

of the city.

“From the exhilarating Frontier Days, which drew 24,985 attendees in 2023, to the enchanting Windscape with 5,519 visitors to the electrifying atmosphere of Swift Current Broncos home games attracting an average of 2,170 attendees per game of the 34 home game season, our city pulsates with excitement and energy,” she said.

She mentioned that there is a vibrant cultural scene in the city with attractions such as Doc’s Town, Arts Council events, Living Sky Casino and Events Centre, the museum and art gallery, Ted Knight Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame, golf courses and Market Square.

“As we celebrate Saskatchewan Tourism Week, let us also shine a spotlight on the unique shopping and dining experiences that Swift Current offers,” she said. “From quaint boutiques to eclectic eateries, our city beckons visitors to indulge in culinary and retail adventure like no other.”

Anderson announced details about several events that will take place in Swift Current during Tourism Awareness Week.

“We will launch a dynamic social media campaign encouraging residents to show their support for local establishments by providing online reviews and testimonials, thereby amplifying their visibility and attracting new customers,” she said.

There will be a Service Best training session on April 19 to provide businesses with essential tools and techniques to deliver exceptional customer service and enhance visitor satisfaction.

Tourism Swift Current has moved to a new office space in the Swift Current Mall and there will be a grand opening celebration of the new location on April 18. This event will include an announcement about a tourism ambassador program.

The decision to move the Tourism Swift Current office from its previous location at the Swift Current Museum to the Swift Current Mall was a result of feedback.

“A lot of the comments and the Google review that I looked at for Tourism Swift Current in the past indicated that it was hard to find us at the museum and that the parking was not ideal for anyone that was pulling a camper,” she said. “So the space that we’re at now, parking is not an issue. I feel our role as Tourism Swift Current a lot of the time is going to be pulling the traffic that’s coming by on the highway, because a lot of people don’t really know what’s here. They’re just going by on the highway. This is a pit stop and so our job is to stop them and make them aware of what we have to offer.”

Tourism Swift Current is looking forward to hosting the 49° x 110° regional tourism conference at the Living Sky Casino Event Centre, May 8-9.

The first day of the event will have a variety of presentations on different topics related to tourism and the second day will offer morning and afternoon workshop training sessions. The deadline for conference registration is April 26.
