Swift Current Oratorio Choir hits the Zion church stage Apr. 14

“When you’re weary, feeling small, when tears are in your eyes…”

The Swift Current Oratorio Choir will build you a Bridge Over Troubled Water! With an uplifting repertoire of beautiful harmonies, their spring concert on Sunday, April 14 will leave you refreshed and recharged.

The concert begins with a rousing tribute to artists of all kinds, but especially the “Music Makers.” From a set of Easter classics to contemporary pieces by Sting and Gordon Lightfoot, there is something for everyone to enjoy. The theme of the concert is “Darkness to Light.” The audience is invited to consider a world without weapons or war, where the human experience is defined not through judgement, but mercy and compassion.

A haunting hymn by Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo features Celia Hammerton on violin. Other pieces feature poems whose words have been set to music, and the exquisite hymn “We Are Held,” that expresses what it is to hold hope in your heart through a difficult time. This sentiment is echoed in “Inscription of Hope,” based on the writings of a Holocaust prisoner for whom hope was the only bridge to a brighter tomorrow. The concluding piece is adapted from Deuteronomy, and celebrates the various ways we can care for each other.

Having just celebrated their 50th season as a community choir, the singers are excited to showcase this beautiful program with works by Canadian and international composers. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. on April 14 at Zion Mennonite Church. Zion has wonderful acoustics, so whether you are in the pews or in the loft, the music will carry you away.

Adult tickets are $25 at the door, but just $20 if purchased in advance at Pharmasave. Students pay $15, and the concert is free for those 10 and under.
