He sat in a wheel­chair Wait­ing for dark­ness to fall As the sky got darker and birds be­came silent Re­mem­ber­ing the hor­rors of death and de­spair Tiny shad­ows in the win­dows evoked panic and fear The wa­ver­ing tree branches creaked like a sol­dier’s gun load­ing, Get­ting ready to fire The sounds of gun­fire rapidly ex­ploded My fel­low sol­diers lay upon the ground and pierc­ing sounds cry for help in my ears Then I glance at my note­book that lay on my half legs, And re­mem­ber that the war to end all wars was still alive in my mem­ory for­ever
