The boys’ high school basketball season is a fragmented one, with long breaks during the holidays and then the exam period.

But for the 2019 portion of the campaign so far, the l’heritage dragons seniors are 2-0, going to stay that way for a while, and pretty happy with their play of late.

“They’re very eager to learn and they work hard ,” said first-year head coach dan legros on wednesday afternoon, after a home-court 64-42 win against the Cornwall Collegiate Golden raiders, one that followed up a 58-22 victory on Monday in Iroquois against the seaway spartans.

But that’s it for a while. exams are approaching and l’heritage doesn’t play again until Jan. 30.

There’ll be more practices before then though, and legros knows they’ll be productive ones.

“we’ve had 100 per cent (attendance) at our (two) practices each week,” he said.

when the dragons first gathered in the fall, legros wasn’t sure to expect. he’d been a teacher and a multi-sport coach in ottawa for 15 years. But, being from Cornwall and raising a young family in the city, legros decided he wanted to work at home too, and began teaching at l’heritage this school year.

athletically, he was coming to a school known for having strong volleyball teams.

“we have some good athletes here,” he said. “These guys are learning to become basketball players, and they work really well as a team.”

last fall, legros’ approach was, “let’s see what we have here,” he recounted.

he quickly discovered the dragons have speed, are aggressive “and we can jump,” he said. “so we said let’s build our systems around that, be a fast-breaking team.”

now the dragons have a bit of momentum to start 2019 – and not too much concern about another long layoff.

“It shouldn’t hurt us too much because we’re not a big shooting team,” said legros, whose a division club is 3-3 overall, two of the setbacks against aa squads st. Joe’s and holy Trinity.

as for working and coaching in his hometown, legros is thrilled about it.

“I wanted to get involved in my own community,” said legros, who this fall was an assistant coach with Kirby Camplin’s tyke wildcats squad in the nCaFa league.

The dragons on wednesday were led offensively by yannis Midou, who had 23 points, and dominic Paquette (20). anthony Valin added 13 points and Vincent Blais added five.

devyn Brammall had 13 for CCVs, and Frank Tarbell had 10. davis Cook-lazore had 10 for the Golden raiders, and Codie Brammall added six.
