Westlock County the latest to issue fire ban

StarMetro Calgary - - CALGARY - HAMDI ISSAWI

Extremely dry and windy conditions led Westlock County, a district of 7,220 residents about 100 minutes north of Edmonton, Alta., to issue a fire ban Monday morning, as crews continue to battle a handful of fires in east central Alberta.

According to the province, 11 new wildfires sparked up in forest protected areas over the last 24 hours, but all are either being held, are under control, or have been turned over to local authorities.

On Sunday, grass fires prompted a partial evacuation of properties near Bruderheim, Alta. Those fires are now under control, but officials say smoke remains a concern. Firefighters also worked on blazes in Mackenzie County, and north of High Level. Learn more about the fire ban at thestar.com
