Notley slams Kenney over Soldiers of Odin photos with UCP candidates

StarMetro Edmonton - - EDMONTON - KIERAN LEAVITT Notley accuses Kenney of using “dog whistle” politics at thestar.com/edmonton

Premier Rachel Notley blasted Opposition Leader Jason Kenney for “dog-whistle politics” after three party candidates had photographs taken of them at a pub night with the white nationalist and anti-immigrant group Soldiers of Odin.

“The UCP (United Conservative Party) has a bit of a problem and quite frankly, Mr. Kenney needs to address this. Going on Twitter to say the UCP is not racist, while important, is clearly not enough,” Notley said at a Tuesday news conference.

The photos were taken at a United Conservative Party constituency pub night on Friday. UCP Edmonton-West Henday candidates Nicole Williams, Leila Houle and Lance Coulter were photographed standing alongside Soldiers of Odin members clad in black clothing with patches that read “S.O.O.”

The candidates have since said they didn’t know who the group was or what they represented.
