Jack Black, cen­tre, stars as war­lock Jonathan Bar­navelt, Owen Vac­caro is his nephew Lewis and Cate Blanchett is Mrs. Zim­mer­man, the witch next door, in the film The House With a Clock in Its Walls, which opens in wide re­lease across Canada on Fri­day. It’s a cu­rios­ity, to say the least, to see gore­meis­ter Eli Roth di­rect­ing this Pg-rated chil­dren’s fan­tasy, a film we might gen­er­ously de­scribe as hor­ror-ish rather than hor­rific, writes Toronto Star movie critic Peter How­ell.
