Com­plainant tes­ti­fies in the sex­ual as­sault re­trial of taxi driver Bas­sam Al-rawi

The com­plainant at the cen­tre of a re­trial for a former Hal­i­fax cab driver ac­cused of sex­ual as­sault said she “sim­ply would not” have con­sented to sex­ual con­tact with a driver she didn’t know.

Bas­sam Al-rawi was in Hal­i­fax pro­vin­cial court be­fore Judge Ann Marie Sim­mons on Wednes­day for the third day in what’s ex­pected to be at least a five-day trial. The re­trial is deal­ing with al­le­ga­tions he sex­u­ally as­saulted a fe­male pas­sen­ger in his cab in the early hours of May 23, 2015. An­swer­ing ques­tions from the Crown, the com­plainant said at the time she lived with a fe­male friend off St. Mar­garets Bay Rd. in the west part of Hal­i­fax.

On the night of May 22, the com­plainant said, she and her room­mate left for a fundrais­ing event around 7:30 p.m. They had pur­chased tick­ets that al­lot­ted each per­son five drink tick­ets. As she was in a hurry, the com­plainant said she didn’t have time to eat din­ner.
