Complainant testifies in the sexual assault retrial of taxi driver Bassam Al-rawi
The complainant at the centre of a retrial for a former Halifax cab driver accused of sexual assault said she “simply would not” have consented to sexual contact with a driver she didn’t know.
Bassam Al-rawi was in Halifax provincial court before Judge Ann Marie Simmons on Wednesday for the third day in what’s expected to be at least a five-day trial. The retrial is dealing with allegations he sexually assaulted a female passenger in his cab in the early hours of May 23, 2015. Answering questions from the Crown, the complainant said at the time she lived with a female friend off St. Margarets Bay Rd. in the west part of Halifax.
On the night of May 22, the complainant said, she and her roommate left for a fundraising event around 7:30 p.m. They had purchased tickets that allotted each person five drink tickets. As she was in a hurry, the complainant said she didn’t have time to eat dinner.
