White-painted floors lend an informal feel to one daughter’s room, which otherwise approaches seriously sophisticated luxe. “I found the half-moon console table on the street being thrown out with the trash,” says the owner. “Then I had it gilded and added a marble top.” The result lends the room a French château feel and illustrates the power of mixing formal and informal, antique and modern. The straight lines of the bed and bench – both upholstered in an unfussy linen – moderate the unabashed girly-ness of the table and vintage dresser.
