MARNER PLAYS A ‘HEAVY GAME’ DESPITE STATURE: CASSIDY

Sunday Sports - - BRUINS AT LEAFS - — Terry Koshan

That Mitch Marner tips the scales at just 175 pounds doesn’t carry much weight with Bruce Cassidy.

“Marner, I don’t know how much he weighs, you would have to tell me,” the Boston Bruins coach said of the young Maple Leafs star. “But try getting the puck from the kid. He plays a heavy game with the puck, a strong game with the puck.

“We try to be physical against him within the rules of the game and he is still strong on it.”

It’s the desire of Leafs coach Mike Babcock to see his club use a heavier approach in general. Cassidy sees a challenge in the Leafs anyway.

“They might not be as big as some of these teams, but they are strong on the puck when they get it,” Cassidy said. “I would say they are more speed than heavy, certainly. I don’t want to categorize them. It’s disrespectful to say they are less heavy than this team or that team. When they are effective they are strong on the puck and that’s when they are heavy.”
