Father rescues son, 13, from blaze
A father who rushed into a burning home several times to rescue his family was in critical condition along with his 13-year-old son Saturday.
The family of six lived in a new suburb in the RM of La Broquerie. Volunteer fire chief Alain Nadeau said the call came in at 5: 51 a. m. Saturday. The fire started in the attached garage. The teenage son had to be rescued from the basement by his father.
The father got everyone out of the house but Nadeau said man and his son were gravely hurt and were rushed to Winnipeg by ambulance.
“ I think it’s time we started to stress that people start having smoke alarms in garages,” said Nadeau. “ You can have a fire in your garage for 40 minutes and then it punctures through the drywall and you have to move very fast to get out.”
Three children along with their mother were able to escape the residence without injuries, Steinbach RCMP said.
The name of the family was not released but its members emigrated from Germany a few years ago.
The Steinbach RCMP along with the Office of the Fire Commissioner are still investigating. At the present time the fire does not appear to be suspicious.
Damage to the home is estimated at $ 500,000.
