Sony UBP-X800

Sony brings all of its years of expertise in music and movies to this Blu-ray player, which provides beautiful 4K HDR video playback (though it doesn’t support Dolby Vision, sadly), as well as exquisite hi-res music playback from SACD and DVD-A. With Netflix and Amazon streaming in 4K on board too, it’s practically a a one-stop shop for highquality playback. £269, sony.co.uk

Panasonic UB900

Panasonic’s top-ofthe-range Blu-ray player is a shiny example of fine industrial design, and an impeccable way to watch Ultra HD films. HDR is here too, and the UB900 includes Dolby Vision support thanks to an update, so you get glorious dynamic brightness and darkness levels in compatible video. It’s also superb for playing music CDs, and streams well, too. £389, panasonic.com

Oppo UDP-203

This Oppo player is unashamedly high-end, but it offers the amazing picture quality you expect, given that fact. There are no streaming apps built in, but just about every 4K file format is supported over DLNA, and the 4K HDR Blu-ray performance is unbeatable for detail and clarity. It also supports 3D movies, as well as SACD and DVD-A for ultrahigh-quality music playback. £649, oppodigital.com

Cambridge Audio CXUHD

Hi-fi specialist Cambridge Audio turns its eye for precision to 4K HDR Blu-ray, and the results are fantastic. It’s made for audiophile sound, and so requires you to provide your own DAC, unlike the others here. This means you can’t plug it straight into your TV – it’ll need to go through an AV receiver or other external DAC option. The results are worth it. £699, cambridgeaudio.com
