Gadget Guru’s magic box
Although Gadget Guru’s true identity is a closely guarded secret – even his sacks of fan mail are passed between at least three handsome and stealthy intermediaries – here’s a little clue: he has been known to do some streaming on Twitch. The hours of sparkling entertainment have so far generated a total viewership of three, so the hordes aren’t onto Guru yet, but he’s been experimenting with a few new tools.
On the head, the Sennheiser GSP 600 headset (£220), a gloriously fat, tight thing with a stupendous microphone. Its closedback cans host a banging bass-slathered soundstage which doesn’t swamp the other tones. It’s wonderful to use. Beneath the fingers, the Roccat Horde AIMO (£90), a weird squishy keyboard that’s branded ‘membranical’ – not too loud on stream, and surprisingly nice to use even for a connoisseur of the click. The media keys, multi-function dial, and the fact that the ever-rubbish Caps Lock key has been replaced with an extra Shift give it the perfect balance of gimmick and practicality.
Under the bum, a ‘gaming chair’, which is something Guru resisted until the masses basically demanded he swap his iron throne for something more practical. The Nitro Concepts E200 (£180) is the sort of seat that looks like it should have a five-point harness and a co-driver, but there’s no way GaGu’s rear is slipping out of it even in the most intense moments of gaming excitement.
Next on the list to buy is a fancy webcam. The Logitech BRIO , at a quite silly £200, certainly has the overkill factor with its 4K resolution and HDR capabilities, but Guru’s sparkling features demand something less crisp. Logitech’s C920 (£79) is tried, tested and far more likely to land on his desk.
