Design

Amazon has toned down the ‘1970s sci-fi film prop’ element of the Show’s design compared to the original, but it’s still a lot more striking than the Hub. The wedge-shaped base is more stable but requires more room than Google’s plastic pal.

display

When it comes to screens, bigger is better, and 10.1 inches is undeniably bigger than seven. The Show’s 1280x800 display is bright and easy on the eyes. Amazon’s graphics for news stories, weather and so on are also much better than Google’s.

Video and audio

Due to an unseemly spat, you can’t watch YouTube on Echo Show at present, but it will serve up videos from Amazon Prime. A camera lets you make video calls to other Alexa devices. As a music speaker, Show is way, way better than Hub.

Smart home Echo Show works best with Ring cameras – because, yes, Amazon owns Ring – although as on Home Hub, third parties are supported with, by most accounts, varying degrees of success. A built-in Zigbee hub helps Amazon win this battle.

verdicT

We’re impressed An excellent screen, surprisingly good audio and handy video chat functions. We’d improve Clearly if you are paranoid about privacy, you won’t want an Echo with a camera.
