Garmin Dash Cam 55 £119, garmin.com
The Garmin is essentially a GoPro for the car with a compact case, great video quality in all conditions and a useful companion app. The only real downside is the lack of a touchscreen.
Nextbase 612GW £249, nextbase.com
If image quality is vital, this is the dash cam for you. It’s big and chunky and the app appears a little flaky, but it’s a simple and high-quality 4K camera that’s easy to install and use.
Thinkware F800 Pro £219, thinkware.com
With an almost invisible design, time-lapse recording and a great night mode, this is a good stealthy option if you’re worried more about vandalism or theft than your fellow drivers.
Mio MiVue C330 £69, mio.com
The Mio delivers 1080p recording at 30fps and is widely available for £70 or less, making it a great first dash cam. Its night mode isn’t brilliant but it’s an otherwise impressive budget buy.
