HOW TO ELEVATE YOUR SUIT GAME

Sarah Gilfillan, men’s personal stylist at Sartoria Lab, shows how it’s done

So you’ve been invited to a formal event and that means it’s time to find the right suit – and fast. But what’s the ideal style and how should you wear accessories? With so many options, it can be a daunting process. To help make this easier for you, T3 reached out to Sarah Gilfillan, personal stylist for men at Sartoria Lab ( sartorialab.co.uk), to get the downlow on how to nail your suit styling.

First things first – find the right suit for your body shape. “The lapel width should correspond with your frame: small guy, slimmer lapels; large guy, wider lapels,” Gilfillan says. “Broad shoulders will look better with a softer shoulder with less padding so as not to add more bulk.” Once you’ve found a suit that fits you can enhance it with accessories. Gilfillan explains that you can match or tone the metals of a watch, tie clip and cufflinks with the hardware on your bag. “Avoid wearing a tie clip with a waistcoat and wear it between the third and fourth buttons of your shirt,” she adds. “Also ensure that it isn’t wider than your tie.”

While the suit-sneaker combination can be risky at best, there are some tricks to get the high-low balance just right. “If you want to wear trainers with your suit then choose one that has more casual features like patch pockets, unstructured shoulders or even elasticated waist trousers,” Gilfillan says.

Looking ahead, Gilfillan recommends watching out for upcoming suit trends: “I think we’ll see more and more double breasted jackets coming in for spring,” Gilfillan adds.
