15 mins of fame
This summer, The Dominion Post hit the streets to ask people random questions for our 15 Minutes of Fame project: from where’s your favourite place for coffee, to what do you think of Trump? Today: Rhonda McCormick, of Masterton, who spends her time craft
The last time I cried was …?
Life changed for me back in 2006 when I got sick with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME). I was working as a painter-decorator in Wellington. It has been a slow journey of recovery and discovery since then.
Where do you take out-of-towners?
Up to the river at Kaituna west of Masterton. It’s a special place for me as I have been going there since I was a little girl.
I can’t leave the house without …?
Sunglasses. My eyes are so sensitive I’m in tears if I try to go without them.
What’s your favourite shop?
Mitre 10. Everything I need in one shop: powertools, paint, wood, hardware and coffee too!
What person was important to you growing up?
MacGyver. I love how he can make something out of nothing and fix anything with duct tape and a pocket knife.
Best purchase you’ve ever made?
My little Suzuki motorbike, but I don’t use it as often as I would like.
What do you spend the most money on?
Art supplies and powertools. I make my own presents and support a few people through artwork. It takes a bit of work to make something look shop-bought!
If you wrote a book, who would you dedicate it to?
I have long wanted to write a children’s story which would be dedicated to my large collection of nieces and nephews who inspire me.
What sits at the top of your bucket list?
Learning multiple languages – I have a large thirst for knowledge.
Do you swerve or run over possums if you see one on the road?
I always swerve for animals if it is safe to do so. I have been told that hitting a rabbit or a possum at speed can puncture tyres.
