Mount Allison Music ensembles present Music of the Giants and Wind Band Favourites
On Thursday, Nov. 30 and Friday, Dec.1, Mount Allison Music ensembles will present a pair of concerts in Convocation Hall under the direction of Dr. Gregory Burton.
At 8 p.m. on Nov. 30, the 42-member Mount Allison University Chamber Orchestra will perform Music of the Giants, a series of stunning works by some of the most celebrated classical composers.
The performance will open with the overture to Mozart’s opera La clemenza di Tito, followed by works for orchestra by Bartók, Villa-Lobos, and Jenkins.
The first half of the programme also includes Beethoven’s beautiful Romance in F Major for Violin and Orchestra, featuring Mount Allison violinist Sannu Lawt.
The second portion of the concert explores the music of Gustav Mahler. Excerpts from the 2nd and 3rd Symphonies will be performed along with Mahler’s Rückert Lieder, featuring Dr. Vicki St. Pierre as contralto soloist.
On Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m., the Mount Allison Symphonic Band presents Wind Band Favourites, concluding the fall term with a performance of timeless works for wind band.
Music of Holst, Wagner, Strauss, Debussy, and Bach will be juxtaposed with works by contemporary composers, blending the classics with the cutting edge.
Original music for winds, along with important transcriptions for the wind ensemble, will highlight the many talented woodwind, brass, and percussion students at the Mount Allison Music Department.
