A story published in The Labradorian recently has the Salvation Army reaching out to people to donate bicycle parts or used bikes that will eventually make their way to Nain.

After Captain Brent Haas read the story about Simon Kohlmeister’s efforts to repair bikes for children in his community, the church added bike parts and used bikes to the list of items the Salvation Army is collecting for the people of Nain.

Other items that will be packed into a sea container for the community include clothing, furniture and various household supplies.

Haas said Patti Penny, a member of the church’s congregation who has roots in Nain, secured the container that is being used to ship the items.

“Our church arranged the shipping of the container, and many others like Shawn Crann helped make an appeal for needed items,” Penny said.

Crann, a councillor in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, attends the Salvation Army. When he heard about the supplies needed for Nain, he wanted to do his part to help.

After posting about the project on Facebook, Crann said supplies quickly came in.

By Aug. 8 he had collected a truckload of items for the project.

Crann has already shipped bedclothes, dishes and pots and pans to the community.

“It’s not all smooth sailing in Nain... and it’s nice to be able to help,” Crann said.

Kohlmeister’s daughter Simone said more bikes are now available and ready for pick-up at her father’s home. However, she added, it seems like all children in Nain now have bikes.

Haas said if the need for bikes is met in Nain, what has been collected will be used to get bikes to children in other communities along the north coast.

The project is another way the church is connecting to and spreading love throughout the Big Land, he said.

“We will be continuously looking for ways to bring the church to the streets and into the community where the people and needs are,” Haas said.

Anyone with items to donate to the project can bring them to the Salvation Army, contact the church at 1-709-896-2756 or give Shawn Crann a call at 1-709-896-1485.
