Executive committee change over at Toys for Joys
We are pleased to pass the torch onto the new executive, for the annual Roger Lyon Memorial “Toys for Joys”. I.e. Todd Kent and his committee will take on this task.
Started in 1993 at the Ashuanipi Club by the late Roger Lyon and his band 6 Pack, a modest sum of $2,500 was raised for kids at Christmas and blossomed into “five figure numbers” where we were able to, not only take care of the immediate need of kids for Christmas, but also help families travelling with sick children with monies left over through The Knights of Columbus.
All this was possible through the many sponsors and volunteer people who came together through those years. Some who stand out we will name here and if we omit anyone we apologize but you know who you are and we, and the kids, deeply appreciate your contribution.
So in no particular order:
The local musicians of Labrador West who always come together for this and many other functions when asked to do so. To name a few - the band Detour, Rebel, The Bys, Cold Shot, Pat Carroll etc. and many more. Nothing like this gets done without the local entertainers.
Sponsors like – Molsons, Labatts, Pal Airlines, Fitz’s, Town of Labrador City, The Scout Lodge
Shawn Oliver and the Labrador West Arts & Culture Centre.
The local business community who donated when our canvassers called on them. Past canvassers - Bridget Baker, Katie Quinton. Presently Jesse Tobin, Michelle Hussey, Pam Waterman and Rick Delaney.
Both the service clubs – Royal Canadian Legion Branch 47, Knights of Columbus. The funds are distributed through the Knights of Columbus as requests come in.
Mention of two very important people in the Knights and greatly appreciated for their efforts over the years are - Joe and Patsy Purcell. These two people, went out, purchased toys, gifts needed, for the list of children they were given, organized the wrapping, delivery in time for Christmas – This was, and is the fundamental reason, the mandate of Toys for Joys.
Thank you Roger Lyon from all the kids and families who have benefited from the event over the years, and finally a heartfelt thanks to the general public who come out to the annual Toys for Joys dance and take part. If we missed anyone it was not intentional, and to name everyone is not possible here.
Please welcome and show the same support for the new executive, and ensure this venture to be successful for many years to come. This fundraiser is a very important part of our communities here in Labrador West and is the envy of many places where they have heard of it.
See you at the Legion in Labrador City – Nov. 24
Sincerely for “Toys for Joys” Bill Abbott
