Members of Quebec’s independent investigations bureau are in Fermont, located 25 kilometres from Labrador City to investigate the deaths of two residents on Friday, Jan. 4.

The Quebec Provincial police received a call early Jan. 4 from a man who said he was shot, and was afraid he was going to die. When the police arrived he told them to break down the door, but when they entered the house they heard shots and went back outside.

Meanwhile, a secure perimeter around the house was established and some residents of nearby homes were evacuated or told to remain inside.

Police returned to the home and entered at about 9:30 a.m. and discovered the bodies of a man and a woman. Quebec media have identified the two as Steve Sinclair, 65, and 42-year-old Josée Savard.

Many residents in the small town of 3,000 were shocked to hear the news, as many people knew the people who died on Friday.

Six investigators from the Bureau des enquetes Independants (BEI) are taking part in the investigation. They are called when there is a loss of life during a police intervention.

It’s uncertain when the results of the investigation will be released. Forty-two-year-old Josée Savard is one of the two people identified by Quebec media as having died on Friday, Jan. 4.
