Soup is on the lunch menu this Saturday for Stratford and area residents.

For the 24th year, the Alzheimer Society of Perth County is bringing its much-loved Soup’s On fundraiser back to the Stratford Rotary Complex from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., where amateur and professional soup chefs will bring their finest creations for attendees to sample.

“As always, there will be lots of soup. We have Strings & Traps performing. They’re a big local favourite, so we’re excited to have them back. Eddie Matthews is our emcee, and we have a huge silent auction with a WestJet voucher, a Via Rail voucher, and all kinds of stuff,” said Amy Robinet, operations coordinator for the local Alzheimer society. “We’ve got smaller items, bigger items. We’ve got furniture, art, we’ve got gift certificates, and we’ve got our kids corner with some face painting and some fun over there.

“But of course the big hit is the soup.”

With 32 soup vendors lined up for the event, those in attendance will have the opportunity to purchase Soupons, which they can use for either full cups or taster portions of as few or as many different kinds of soup as they like.

“This is a soup-tasting event, so we hope people will try a variety of soups – try something they maybe wouldn’t necessarily try – and find some new soups to like,” Robinet said.

But of the 32 vendors, Robinet would only reveal the type of soup she and her colleagues at the Alzheimer Society of Perth County will be serving up – a black bean and salsa soup that was a hit when they held its annual soup-tasting lunch hour last fall to determine which one they would showcase.

“And some of those vendors are doing two soups, so there will be lots to try. … Of course, we’ve got the local restaurants and shops doing some soups, but we also have some service groups. We have a church. We have some local businesses, so it’s sort of all over the map,” she said.

“... I can’t divulge who’s making what. I’m sworn to secrecy on several. There are some really neat ones this year.”

Carrying forward an initiative started last year in an effort to cut down on waste, Robinet is asking attendees to bring their own soup spoons. Those who bring their own spoons will be eligible to enter a draw for a tree, donated by Stratford’s energy and environment committee.

Along with the cost of Soupons, admission is by donation. All proceeds will go back to the Alzheimer Society of Perth County.

“All the money raised stays here in Perth County, and of course we serve the entire county. So that’s Listowel, over to Mitchell, Stratford, St. Marys, and everyone in between,” Robinet said. “That helps with support groups, education sessions, and all the things we do here in the office, so we’re so thrilled that this community supports this event so well.”
