THEODORE J. MATTIE

Funeral service for the late Theodore Joseph ‘Ted’ Mattie, 77, Tracadie, was held October 16 in St. Peter’s Church, Tracadie, with Father John Barry officiating, assisted by Deacon Art Riley.

Mr. Mattie died October 11, 2018.

Readers at the funeral Mass were godchildren Michelle Mattie and Pam Morrow. Eucharistic minister was cousin Heather Pettipas. Altar servers were Donnie Pitts, Myles Somers and Francis Delorey. Music was provided by Ty Wallace.

Pallbearers were cousins Leonard Mattie, Fred Delorey, Greg Mattie, James Delorey, Gerard Landry and Arthur Boucher.

Tracadie Holy Name Society formed an honour guard.

Born May 12, 1941, in Barrios Beach, Antigonish County, he was a son of the late James ‘Jimmy’ Frederick and Rita Elizabeth (Bonvie) Mattie. He was a farmer all of his life and was well known as a pork and beef producer as owner of Mattie Farms Ltd, Tracadie. He was actively involved in several agricultural organizations, including as a member of the Nova Scotia Institute of Agrologists - receiving the Outstanding Farmer Award in 1994, serving terms as president of the Federation of Agriculture, Senate Club, NS Pork Producers, NS Cattlemen’s Association, vice president of Antigonish Farmers’ Mutual Insurance Company board of directors. He was the first farmer to be awarded the Antigonish County Farm of the Year award. He served his community through the Tracadie Holy Names Society, Tracadie Volunteer Fire Department, St. Peters Parish Cemetery committee, and treasurer of the Tracadie Seniors Club. He served as a board member of St. Martha’s Regional Hospital Foundation and was a member of the Highlander Curling Club. An avid gardener, he was proud of his harvest and early vegetables.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Dorothy Anne (Deyoung); three daughters,

Lynn, Truro; Julieanne (Darryl) Connors, Afton; Jennifer

(Dwayne) Baines, Spruce Grove, Alberta; son, Daniel (Jackie), Edmonton, Alberta; five grandchildren, Dane Matheson, Rory and Brenna Connors, Colten and Camren Mattie; sister, Carol Schembri, British Columbia; five brothers, Michael (Anne), Stellarton; Basil (Elaine), Tracadie; Bernie (Karen), Port Hawkesbury; Robert, Halifax; Ralph (Donalda), Tracadie; sister, Charlotte (John) Mattie, Monastery; sister-in-law, Marie Mattie; aunt, Ethel (Bonvie) Landry; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his oldest brother, James Frederick; brother-in-law, Spiro Schembri.
