The L’arche Antigonish community came together Oct. 16 for their monthly dinner to celebrate a special occasion. Lochaber Growers Cooperative hosted a catered dinner at the Arisaig Community Hall in celebration of their ongoing partnership with L’arche.

Since 2017, Lochaber Growers has been providing L’arche Antigonish with 10 CSA (community supported agriculture) boxes containing the fresh fruits and vegetables of the seasons. The event was an opportunity to bring together the growers and the people they serve.

The chef of the night was Gyungbo Noh, who was a cook at the Town House Brewpub and Eatery and is now a farm intern at the Bethany Gardens.

The three course dinner featured the summer and fall harvest from the Lochaber Growers and Bethany Gardens; including corn chowder, roasted sweet mama squash and beets, a salad with cherry tomatoes, pulled pork with kimchi, and a blueberry crisp.

The evening proceeded with the warm atmosphere associated with L’arche’s gatherings as birthdays, news, and upcoming events were shared.

“A simple life is one of the core values of L’arche and sustainability, and supporting local is part of this simple life,” L’arche community leader Beth Wolters said.

“To then share a meal with those who grew our food and prepared it with such intention, was a gift.”

L’arche member Eileen Garvie added, “I liked the meal and I liked the people … all from the farm.”

The event was organized by Amy Buckland-nicks, who is an intern with Lochaber Growers as part of the Job Creation Partnership Program with the Government of Nova Scotia. During the summer, she also organised cooking demonstrations at the five L’arche homes.
