You know it’s the fall season when you start hearing about harvest dinners.

That is the case for Oct. 5 at the St. Joseph’s Lakeside Community Centre which will feature cuisine from Master Chef contestant and owner of The Humble Table,

Jenny Miller, and musical entertainment by popular local band Great Blue Heron.

All proceeds will go to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC) with the event being hosted by St. Joseph’s resident Amy Carver.

“I was diagnosed with lymphoma in June 2018; that is how I became involved, originally,” Carver said, noting she took part in the society’s Light the Night event in Halifax last year, and will do so again, and include the proceeds from the dinner.

“It’s a walk for advocacy, every October in Halifax,” she said, noting this year it will take place Oct. 19.

“So I’m part of that, and to raise money for it, we’re going to do the harvest dinner.”

Carver has started a Facebook group page called The Lymph Busters: Gnome More Cancer! Light the Night Team. On it, she talks more about the Light the Night event.

“(It) allows the gathering of families, friends, and coworkers to celebrate, honour, and remember those touched by blood cancer. All funds raised are used by the LLSC to support patients at any stage of their cancer journey; provide information and vital support services.

“The funds raised for Light the Night Halifax stay in the Atlantic provinces. Together with my family and friends we walk as team The Lymph Busters.”

As for the dinner, Carver said it was an idea she came up with “on the fly,” noting she wanted to try something different than finding sponsors for their team’s participation in the walk.

“I was talking to Jenny [Miller] about it and she thought she could help me with it; and Great Blue Heron was interested in helping as well,” she said. “So we collaborated and this is what we came up with.”

The event takes place at the centre from 5 to 9 p.m., with door prizes and a cash bar, as part of the evening.

There are only 30 tickets available and those can be obtained by calling Carver at 902-885-5821 or via email at thelymphbusters@gmail.com.

Carver can also provide additional information on the dinner and walk, which can also be found, as well as an online auction (Sept. 8 to 14), on the aforementioned Facebook page.
