‘Everyone needs to be prepared’
Education an important component of fire safety, Fire Prevention Week educator says
It's always an appropriate time to think about fire safety, but during one week in particular, it's even more front of mind.
Oct. 9 to 15 is Fire Prevention Week with the theme of ‘Fire won't wait. Plan your escape.'
Two local firefighters say education plays an important part in reducing fires.
Darrell Novak, with the Antigonish County Volunteer Fire Department, says he has seen a drop in calls during his nearly 20 years in the department.
“This, I believe, is due to education and awareness in the media and education sessions in the local communities,” Novak says, who is the department's Fire Prevention Week educator.
Information officer John Pellerin, with the Antigonish Town Volunteer Fire Department,
notes the week serves as a time to reiterate their message and show what the department does.
Evacuation plans and maintenance of smoke alarms are both key factors in reducing injury and risk for both residents and firefighters.
“It's important for everyone to plan and practice a home
fire escape. Everyone needs to be prepared in advance so that they know what to do when the smoke alarm sounds. Given that every home is different, every home fire escape plan will also be different. Have a plan for everyone in the home. Children, older adults, and people with disabilities may need assistance to wake up and get out. Make sure that someone will help them,” says Pellerin.
He stresses the value of smoke detectors, noting they will sometimes arrive at a call where it has been disconnected due to its proximity to the kitchen.
“We stress that as annoying as it can be, at the end of the day it can save your life.”
Novak also stresses the importance of a working smoke detector.
“I recommend changing the battery in your smoke detector twice a year, spring and fall. And testing it regularly.”
The local fire departments will be participating in an emergency vehicle parade during Fire Prevention Week, as well as holding fire drills for schools, and residential buildings.
Antigonish County Volunteer Fire Department will also be doing education for the primary classes at Antigonish Education Centre.
