Canning to play for Guelph United this summer
Antigonish soccer standout will join St. F.X. squad in the fall
Soccer is a way of life for Bryn Canning of Antigonish, N.S. She's been playing the sport since she was in kindergarten. “I grew up playing soccer. All of my siblings played, so I had always been surrounded by the sport. My first organized soccer experience was Timbit soccer when I was five years old,” said Canning.
My family was always involved in soccer, but my dad is especially passionate about it,” continued Canning. “From a very young age, he would play with me at every opportunity, and I think that passion and love for the game was contagious.”
Canning will spend the summer of 2024 playing with Guelph United.
“In playing for Guelph United I will be exposed to a new level of competition. I look forward to the challenge of improving my skills under the guidance of coach Randy Ribeiro,” said Canning.
In her senior year at Dr. JH Gillis, Canning will be joining the St. F.X. women's soccer team in the fall of 2024 as a centre midfielder and studying human kinetics.
“I am most looking forward to playing at the next level. As the reigning AUS champion, St. F.X. soccer has an excellent reputation. Coach Kennedy has developed a premier program making St. F.X. a destination soccer school,” said Canning.
With the success of The Canada women's national soccer team, formerly led by Christine Sinclair, the future is bright for those who hope to follow in her footsteps.
“Opportunities for Canadian women's soccer players are improving with the development of a new pro league called Project Eight,” said Canning. “This will allow players to continue with soccer beyond their university years in a proenvironment. I hope to play soccer and be involved with the sport for as long as possible.”
