THE LINEUP
Here’s the lineup for the Newfoundland and Labrador Drama Festival:
Monday, April 10
Northcliff Drama Club presents Self-Help by Norm Foster.
Directed by Dave Anthony and Mary Kelly.
It’s a full-length comedy about a married pair of struggling actors who decide to reinvent themselves as self-help gurus and, much to their surprise, soon they have it all.
Tuesday, April 11
St. John’s Players presents Calendar Girls by Tim Firth. Directed by Louise Kearley. When Annie’s husband John dies of leukemia, she and best friend Chris resolve to raise money for a new settee in the local hospital waiting room. They manage to persuade four fellow Women’s Institute (WI) members to pose nude with them for an “alternative” calendar, with a little help from hospital porter and amateur photographer Lawrence.
The news of the women’s charitable venture spreads and the press soon descends on the small village of Knapeley in the Yorkshire Dales. The calendar is a success, but Chris and Annie’s friendship is put to the test under the strain of their newfound fame.
Wednesday, April 12
Avion Players presents Brazil Square by Bernie Stapleton.
Directed by Claude House. A comedic, irreverent and poignant play about the once-iconic boarding house district of St. John’s. The actors play more than 20 characters on a crazy rollercoaster ride through four decades with all the humour, wisdom and eccentricity the Square has to offer.
Thursday, April 13
Northern Lights Theatre Company presents A Night in the Theatre by Lawrence Casler.
Directed by Craig Robinson. Margaret and Stanley Locker and their friends Donna and Walter Pace are at the theatre for their weekly dose of culture. This week’s ordeal is Hamlet. After they seat themselves with some confusion, the play consists of their incessant and hilarious chatter about themselves, their children, a dead friend, and occasionally, Shakespeare’s play.
Friday, April 14
School Zone Productions presents Twilight Zone (series 6): In The Dark adapted by Christopher Tobin from the original teleplays. Directed by Fabian O’Keefe. Three new adaptations of the classic Twilight Zone television series: In The Dark.
It features another three thematically linked tales of the imagination. Join a ‘reader’ looking for peace in a frantic world, pray for a fearful woman hiding alone in the dark, and hope for a failed colony longing for home.
Saturday, April 15
Off Broadway Players presents Stop Kiss by Diana Son.
Directed by Sarah Thompson.
Sara and Callie are walking through New York City’s West Village late at night when they share their first kiss. This leads to a vicious attack by an angry bystander, in which Sara is horribly injured. The nonlinear story follows the aftermath of the attack, as well as the moments of Callie and Sara’s relationship that led up to the walk through the park.
