Weaver, Kline shooting film in N.S.
The Good House, based on bestselling novel, starts production this week
A major U.S. film production is about to start shooting on the South Shore, as triple-Academy Award nominee Sigourney Weaver and Oscar-winner Kevin Kline head to Nova Scotia to star in a feature adaptation of Ann Leary’s bestselling novel The Good House.
Amblin Partners, the production company co-founded by Steven Spielberg, has announced that filming begins “in Canada this week,” but residents around Chester and Lunenburg are already aware that their historic towns will provide the scenery for the New England-set story about Hildy Good (Weaver), a Massachusetts realtor with ancestral ties to the Salem witches.
In the novel, Good loves a glass or five of red wine and sees her controlled professional life come undone by the appearance of an old flame and an aquaintance’ sou t-of-control behaviour. The New York Times called Leary’s second novel “a layered and complex portrait of a woman struggling with addiction, in a town where no secret stays secret for long.”
Emmy Award-winning director Maya Forbes (The Polka King, Infinitely Polar Bear) collaborated on the script with her husband, screenwriter and occasional Wes Anderson cast member Wally Wolodarsky, and producers include Jane Rosenthal and Berry Welsh (both from Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman) and Oscar-nominee Aaron Ryder (Arrival) of FilmNation Entertainment.
It’s not the first time Weaver and Kline have worked together. They previously both appeared in the 1993 comedy Dave and Ang Lee’s 1997 drama The Ice Storm. Weaver was nominated for Oscars for her roles in Aliens, Working Girl and Gorillas in the Mist, while Kline was recognized for his supporting role in A Fish Called Wanda and is also a three-time Tony Award winner.
The Good House will be released in North America by Universal Pictures, while Universal and Amblin Partners will share overseas distribution rights.
