SPORTS Waters stars as Capers advance

Axewomen move into semifinals

Charlie Waters scored three times in the second half as the Cape Breton Capers dropped the Calgary Dinos 4-1 in quarter-final action at the U Sports men's soccer championsh­ip on a cold and snowy Thursday in Montreal.

Waters scored in the 49th minute on a penalty kick and added markers in the 68th and 74th minutes.

While Waters played the second-half hero, it was Cory Bent with the highlight-real goal in the opening period.

Bent opened the scoring in the 21st minute with some dazzling footwork to beat a pair of Dinos defenders in the box and calmly put a shot past keeper Jake Ruschkowsk­i.

The Capers advance to semifinal action on Friday.

Earlier in the day, Stefan Karajonano­vic and Gabriel Bitar scored as the Carleton Ravens blanked the St. Francis Xavier X-Men 2-0 .

After a scoreless first half, Karajonano­vic put the Ravens on the scoreboard in the 53rd minute. Bitar put the game away with a goal in the 87th minute.

Nick Jeffs had the clean sheet as Carleton outshot St. F.X. 17-8.

In other quarter-final games, UQTR beat UBC 1-0. York played Montreal in a late game.

WOMEN

The Acadia Axewomen advanced to the semifinals of the U Sports women's soccer championsh­ip with a 2-1 win over the York Lions in Victoria, B.C.

Grace Longley and Jenna Boudreau scored for the Axewomen, who will play in a semifinal game on Saturday.

The AUS conference champion Cape Breton Capers played Toronto in a Thursday night game.

On Wednesday night, Capers' Alliyah Rowe was named the rookie of the year by U Sportd.

The Kitchener, Ont., native lit up the AUS in her freshman season with 14 goals, second in the nation.

Rowe was the hero in the AUS championsh­ip win over the Axewomen when she scored twice and assisted on another in a 3-2 victory.

Rowe was also named a firstteam All-Canadian and AllRookie team member.

“Ally has been an impact with our team since day one. She shows great composure on the ball as she leads our front line,” said Cape Breton head coach Ness Timmons, ”She possesses a high soccer IQ, and is constantly working to improve her game. She is a true pleasure to coach.”

Dalhousie Tigers' Sydney Kenney was the recipient of the student-athlete community service award.

Kenney, a neuroscien­ce student from Halifax, has had success on the soccer field and in the classroom, while also volunteeri­ng her time in the community.

The fourth-year defender helped the Tigers to a 6-3-3 record, with just eight goals allowed all season.

Midfielder Ciera Disipio (Cape Breton), forward Amanda Smith (St. Francis Xavier) joined Rowe as first-team AllCanadia­ns.

Mercy Myles (St. F.X.), Jenna Boudreau (Acadia) and Halifax's Katherine Bearne (Ottawa) were named second-team AllCanadia­ns.

Rowe, Mya Harnish (Acadia) and Morgan Leon (Dalhousie) were selected to the All-rookie team.
