SYDNEY — Criminal charges have now been filed in connection with a single vehicle accident that claimed the life of a 29-year-old Glace Bay mother of four children.

Charged is Adam Alexander Fraser, 27, of Hare Street, North Sydney. He faces charges of impaired driving, driving with a blood-alcohol level exceeding the legal limit, impaired driving causing bodily harm, impaired driving causing death, dangerous driving, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing death and driving while prohibited.

Fraser made a brief provincial court appearance Thursday and was remanded pending the outcome of a bail hearing set for Nov. 14.

The offences are alleged to have occurred Sept. 19 in Leitches Creek.

The accident occurred at about 7 p.m. when an eastbound van carrying the four children and their mother, Billie Jean Blanchard, left Highway 125 and rolled into a ditch near Leitches Creek. Everyone in the vehicle was transported to hospital and Blanchard was later airlifted to hospital in Halifax where she died five days later.

Blanchard and Fraser were dating for about six months prior to the accident.

“There is some measure of comfort in knowing charges have been filed,” said Billy Fraser, Blanchard's father, when contacted Thursday.

“People have to be held accountable when they drink and drive,” he said.

Blanchard's children are being cared for by their father. (Cape Breton Post)
