Axemen dominate AUS football awards

Acadia Axemen quarterbac­k Hunter Guenard is this year's AUS football league most valuable player.

The fourth-year pivot totalled 2,287 passing yards and a league-best 16 touchdown passes to earn the Chris Flynn trophy. He was also named a conference all-star for a second straight year.

Teammate Bailey Feltmate won the Tony Proudfoot trophy as defensive player of the year and the student-athlete community service award. He was also an AUS first-team all-star and it is the second time he has been named the conference's top defender.

Feltmate was second in the league in solo tackles (45), total tackles (58.5) and tackles per game (7.4). He also has a 3.63 grade point average, is the director of the Acadia S.M.I.L.E. (Sensory Motor Instructio­nal Leadership Experience) program and is an athletic therapist for the Axemen basketball team.

Also from Acadia, Oliver Grant was the lineman of the year, Jeff Cummins was named coach of the year and Michael Squires was the assistant coach of the year. The Axemen won the regular season with a perfect 8-0 record.

Defensive back Daniel Bell of the

Mount Allison Mounties was the rookie of the year. The defensive back finished fourth in the league with four sacks and was third on the Mounties with 35.5 tackles.

Defensive all-stars are: defensive tackles Angelo Gentile (Acadia), Reece Martin (Mount Allison), defensive ends Alex Fedchun (StFX), Aidan John (Saint Mary's), Louve Moussengue­t (Bishop's), Riley Gabriel (Acadia), free safety Lucas Cormier (Mount Allison), halfbacks Daniel Bell (Mount Allison), Cole Virtanen (StFX) and cornerback­s Antoine Lyte-Myers (Saint Mary's) and Nicholas Cartagenis­e (Bishop's).

Offensive all-stars are centre Jonathan Zamora (StFX), guards Peter Kourtis (Saint Mary's), Brock O'Brien (Mount Allison), tackles Oliver Grant (Acadia), Gregor MacKellar (StFX), inside receivers Liam O'Brien (Saint Mary's), Nathan Walker (Bishop's), wide receivers Glodin Mulali (Acadia) and Cordell Hastings (Acadia) and running backs Dale Wright (Acadia) and Louis-Philippe Gregoire (Bishop's).

Sepcial team all-stars are: place kicker Brian Hope (Saint Mary's), punter Keiran Burnham (StFX) and kick returner Glodin Mulali (Acadia).
