McDonald scores 25 for unbeaten Axewomen

Haley McDonald scored 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds as unbeaten Acadia improved to 3-0 as the Axewomen earned a 74-60 road victory over the UNB Reds in Atlantic university basketball play Friday in Fredericto­n.

League leading scorer Jayda Veinot added 17 points for the Axewomen, who led by 20 heading into the fourth quarter and kept the Reds to just 29 per cent shooting from the field.

Mikaela Dodig topped UNB (1-2) with 13 points.

Panthers 73, X-Women 60: At Antigonish, UPEI kept pace with Acadia with a road win over UPEI.

Jenna Mae Ellsworth had 17 points and nine boards for the Panthers (3-0). Briar MacDonald answered with 17 for the XWomen (0-2).

In men's hoops:

X-Men 72, Panthers 71: At Antigonish, Azaro Roker tallied 17 points and 14 rebounds as St. F.X. (1-1) squeaked past UPEI (1-2) for its first win of the season.

Reds 87, Axemen 81: At Fredericto­n, Matur Maluach's game-high 18 points led UNB (2-1) over Acadia (1-2).

HOCKEY

Eric Brassard turned aside 29 shots for Saint Mary's as he backstoppe­d the Huskies to a 3-1 victory over host UNB in Fredericto­n.

Mitchell Balmas and Connor McGlynn each netted power-play goals and Noah Zilbert added an empty-net marker with eight seconds left on the clock for SMU, which has won four in a row. The Huskies improve to 8-3 and move into a tie for second place with the Reds (8-3). Tyler Boland had the UNB goal.

Aigles Bleus 4, Axemen 2: At Moncton, Maxime St-Cyr potted a pair of goals as Moncton (4-4-3) doubled league-leading Acadia (9-2).

Liam Maaskant and Rodney Southam answered for the Axemen.

Panthers 6, X-Men 3: At Charlottet­own, Owen Headrick scored back-toback goals less than three minutes apart in the third period to pace UPEI (3-6-2) past St. F.X. (5-5-2).

Mark Tremaine tallied twice and Declan Smith scored once for the X-Men. In women's hockey

Reds 5, Tigers 2: At Halifax Forum, Hailey Martens stopped 32 shots as UNB (7-4) beat host Dalhousie (3-8).

VOLLEYBALL

Julie Moore collected 18 kills and 17 digs to pace undefeated Dalhousie to a 3-1 victory over Saint Mary's in women's volleyball at Dalplex.

Scores were: 23-25, 25-14, 25-15, 25-21.

Elsewhere, Acadia swept UNB 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 26-24) in Wolfville and Moncton blanked the Memorial SeaHawks 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-23) in

St. John's, N.L.
