St. F.X. out of men’s tourney
The St. Francis Xavier X-Men will leave the U Sports men's soccer championship without a victory.
The X-Men, who dropped their tournament opener, 2-0 to the Carleton Ravens on Thursday, were blanked 2-0 by the UBC Thunderbirds in a consolation semifinal Friday afternoon in Montreal.
Nick Fussell scored in the 15th minute and Jordan Haynes added an insurance tally late in the match for UBC.
St. F.X. ends its season with a record of 10-4-1 in AUS regular season and postseason play as well as U Sports championship action. UBC will face either the York Lions or Calgary Dinos in Saturday's consolation final.
The AUS champion Cape Breton Capers, who beat Calgary 4-1 in their tournament opener, played the host Montreal Carabins in Friday's late semifinal. The winner advances to Sunday's gold-medal game against either Carleton or the UQTR Patriotes.
At the U Sports women's championship in Victoria, Cape Breton fell 1-0 to the host Victoria Vikes in a consolation semifinal Friday night. It concluded a disappointing tournament for the the AUS champion Capers, which earned national silver (2017) and bronze (last year) medals in its previous two appearances.
CBU was relegated to the consolation round after losing 3-0 to the Toronto Varsity Blues in a semifinal late Thursday evening.
Second team all-Canadian Jenny Wolever potted a pair of goals for Toronto.
The Acadia Axewomen, who earned a 2-1 victory over York in their tournament opener Thursday, will play UBC in Saturday's semifinal with a trip to Sunday's final on the line.
