BRAUNERT, Edith "May"

Born in Higham Ferrers, Northamptonshire, England, she was the third daughter of the late Percy John and Rose Rebecca (Radwell) Marlow. As a teenager, after her schooling, she worked at the local pharmacy and later at a nearby shoe factory. When May was 19, she made the journey to Toronto, Canada under the British assisted passage scheme, which encouraged people to go and work in the colonies. She worked in a shoe factory on arrival. Eventually May pursued a career in banking and soon met her husband Guenter, who came to Canada from Germany. After the birth of their two children, Guenter moved the family to Dartmouth, to pursue job opportunities. After years of looking after her children and home, May headed back into the workforce, again in the banking industry. Years later the family moved to Chester Grant where many will remember her working as a teller at the Bank of Nova Scotia in Chester. After retiring from the bank, May followed her love of children and became a devoted and caring nanny. She also kept herself busy helping at a local flower shop. In her later years she can be most remembered as her husband’s dedicated caregiver. May was a loving and caring wife, mom, and grandmother and gave a lifetime of support to her extended family in England. A great storyteller who could talk for hours and a lady with an infectious laugh. Happy and a pleasure to be around, always willing to join in on some fun and games. May was also known for her strong, feisty personality and independent character. She loved shopping, nice clothes, music, and dancing and was well liked by those who knew her. She touched many hearts and will be greatly missed. May was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Guenter Braunert; and sisters, Doreen York and Rita Line. She is survived by her daughter, Gabrielle Braunert ( Stephen Snair), Hammonds Plains; son, David Braunert (Kaye Hirtle), Chester; grandchildren, Brandon, Damon and Danita; sister, Christine Drage (Dave), England; and lifelong best friend, Virginia Drew. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy. 3, Lunenburg. A graveside service will be held in St. John’s Anglican Cemetery in Chester Basin at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made to The Children’s Wish Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
