TANNER, Douglas Freeman

-

Age 81 of Maitland. It is with saddened hearts that the family announces the passing of Dougie who passed away at home on July 15, 2021. Born in Dean Settlement, he was a son of the late Arnold and Frances (Hamilton) Tanner. Douglas worked in the woods his entire life. He was an avid fisherman, gardener and hunter. He was looking forward to a moose hunt this fall. He enjoyed making maple syrup and reading Westerns at the family cottage every spring. Hockey was a passion especially this year when his lifelong team almost brought the cup home to Canada. Douglas was a volunteer firefighter and chief of Maitland & District Volunteer Fire Dept. for almost 30 years and played a large part of getting it off the ground. He will be missed by his wife of 61 years, Claire; children, Faye “his brat”, Kevin (Anna), Leroy (Wanda), Robert, Don (Karen); grandchildren, Paul, Matthew, Brittney, Eben, Josh, Shay, James, Makayla and Erik; he will always be remembered in their hearts as “Poppy”; 11 great-grandchildren; brothers, Bob, Eben (Erma); sister, Carolyn (Joy); and a whole herd of extended family. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his sister, Mina. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Ettinger Funeral Home, Shubenacadie. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. Donations in memory may be made to the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation. A special thank you to the fire department, medical staff and RCMP. Condolences, words of comfort and memories of Douglas may be shared with the familyy at: www.ettingeingerfuneralhome.com
