Wanderers fall to Edmonton and into last place

-

The reeling HFX Wanderers are now looking up at the rest of their Canadian Premier League opponents.

The Wanderers were held without a goal for the fifth time in seven matches in the Winnipeg bubble on Wednesday evening, dropping a 1-0 decision to FC Edmonton.

The Wanderers (1-4-2), whose only win was against Edmonton on July 10, sit at the bottom of the CPL table with only five points, one back of York United.

Easton Ongaro netted the lone goal of the match in the 81st minute as Edmonton improved to 2-3-2. Edmonton failed to register a shot on target in the first half.

After Fraser Aird fired a free kick off the crossbar with about 15 minutes remaining, Aird took full advantage of some careless Halifax defence, stole the ball from a Wanderers defender and fed Ongaro who had an open net.

Akeem Garcia, last season's Golden Boot winner who has yet to score this season, was held out of the starting lineup in favour of Joao Morelli. Garcia eventually did get into the match but Edmonton held firm.

The Wanderers can leave Winnipeg on a high note. They have one match remaining — this Saturday against the league-leading Valour FC (6-1-0) — before they return home to Nova Scotia.
