ORMSTON (Shaw), Margaret "Peggy"

After over 101 years of remarkable achievements, it is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Margaret Cunningham Shaw Ormston on July 24, 2021 in Saint Vincent’s Nursing Home, with family by her side. Known as Peggy for most of her life, Mom lived the first 40 of her years in Ontario. While living in Timmins, Peggy was a celebrated singer. Her musical career started with Scottish dancing, and she sang in the United Church choir often as a soloist. Peggy was often invited to sing on the local radio station, CKGB as well as at the weddings of several of her friends. For three years, Peggy was president of the Daughters of Scotland, a cultural social club for Scottish women. She followed her mother who founded the organization in Timmins, when a large group of immigrants arrived after the war to work in the gold mines. Mom fell in love with a neighbour named Eric Ormston who became interested in her after he tasted her butter tarts. Happily married in 1943, the pair had five children before a dramatic change came with a move to Sept-iles, Qué., where all of our lives changed forever. Peggy’s beloved husband died unexpectedly at age 39. Peggy’s life changed when she applied for work at the Iron Ore Company which had triggered our move. Not surprising her test results topped the other employees and she was hired as a computer operator, a rare job in the early 1960s. She was the only woman to be trained in Montréal with several companies’ employees and she went on to have a very productive life helping her children to get their lives going. Opting to retire at age 60, Mom came to Halifax where she spent her remaining 41 years pursuing her interests including the creation of artistically beautiful painted eggs, competitive gaming at shuffleboard, Scrabble and cribbage, and energetic hiking through the city parks. Peggy was predeceased by brother, George; and husband, Eric. She is survived by brothers, William (Norma Forrester), Douglas, Donald (Pearl); her sons, Randal (Nancy Holme), Ron (Fernande Devost), Rick (Donna Morrissey); and daughters, Nancy Maguire, Susan Holden (Michael); grandchildren, Carolyn (Mike Kenna), Sarah (Brad Stronach), Eric, Emma, Christopher (Jenna Leblanc); great-granddaughter, Makenna; and many nieces and nephews. After 61 years of being apart Mom is finally at peace and has rejoined the love of her life. At Mom’s request there will be no service. Donations in Peggy’s memory can be made to Saint Vincent’s Nursing Home, 2080 Windsor St., Halifax, NS B3K 5B2 or visit: www.svnh.ca This was the perfect place for her to spend the last years of her remarkable life. Thank you to all the staff for their care, compassion and support over the last three years.
