Rhyno sent to trial for second-degree murder

A Head of St. Margarets Bay man has been committed to stand trial on a charge of second-degree murder from a killing in Dartmouth last October.

Nicholas Roland Rhyno, 34, is accused of unlawfully causing the death of Zachery Grosse, 25, of Dartmouth.

A preliminary inquiry for Rhyno was held in Dartmouth provincial court last month. Judge Rickcola Brinton gave her decision Tuesday, finding there was sufficient evidence for the case to proceed to Nova Scotia Supreme Court for a jury trial.

Rhyno and his lawyer, Patrick Macewen, will appear in Supreme Court on Aug. 5 to begin the process of setting trial dates.

Police responded to a weapons call Oct. 22 at about 6:30 p.m. and found Grosse with life-threatening injuries outside an apartment building at 24 Primrose St.

The young man died at the Halifax Infirmary early the next morning, surrounded by his family.

Rhyno was arrested in Halifax on Oct. 28. He was denied bail in Supreme Court earlier this year.

At the preliminary inquiry, Crown attorneys Eric Taylor and Michelle Macdonald called evidence from two police officers, two women who were at the apartment building on the night of the incident, a medical examiner and a doctor who's a member of the trauma team at the Infirmary.

Grosse's cause of death was not revealed by the police or prosecutors prior to the

inquiry. There's a publication ban on the evidence from the hearing to preserve Rhyno's right to a fair trial.

Rhyno has been ordered to have no contact with the two civilian witnesses.
