MD, CCFP, FCFP, ABFP, LM (Ret'd). Age 89, Halifax, passed away May 18, 2022 after a brief illness. Born in Shubenacad­ie, he was a son of the late Corey and Muriel (Mackay) Brown. Don met the love of his life, the late Eleanore K. Brown (Buck, 2018) while they were both working at The Moncton Hospital in 1958 and married in 1959 later moving several times while practicing in rural Nova Scotia until they put down roots in Halifax in 1968, where he joined Dalhousie’s Medical School as the first full-time faculty teacher, and became the first director of residency training, in what would become the Department of Family Medicine. In 1996 Don decided to leave Family Medicine and the Dalhousie faculty to focus on medical hypnosis, retiring fully 20 years later in 2016. Dad had been a member of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CCFP) since 1961, had participat­ed in dozens of research studies and served as chair on countless committees over his career. He had won more then 20 awards for his work in family medicine and medical hypnosis and had developed over 150 papers, articles and workshops over the years as well as publishing a book, Advances In The Use Of Hypnosis for Medicine, Dentistry And Pain Prevention Management. Don always enjoyed working on projects such as building walls and shoring up the seawall on the North West Arm property that always seemed to require the help of the boys, mixing cement and moving tons of sand and gravel from the driveway to the waterfront. He was happiest when surrounded by his family and friends at home or at the cottage as well as driving the family (and sometime friends) throughout North America on epic camping and ski adventures. He was also a long time Elder at Saint Andrews United Church. Donald is survived by sons, Scott (Susan), Halifax; Michael (Mary Ann), Riverview, N.B.; Mark (Jo), Tasmania; David (Karen), Halifax; daughter, Joanne, London, Ont.; and special daughter-in-law, Janet of Halifax; grandchild­ren, Cory, Brandon, Matthew, Marc, Amanda, Jack, Will, Fergus, Will, David, Jenna, Josh; great-grandchild, Harvey; brother-in-law, Art (Sonja) Buck, Moncton, N.B.; sisterin-law, Gloria Buck, Gatineau, Que.; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predecease­d by his parents, Corey and Muriel Brown; wife, Eleanore; and her brother Douglas; and brothers, Glendon, Seldon, Leon and Vincent. Due to COVID-19 and Don’s wishes, a celebratio­n of life will be held at a later date to be announced. Cremation has taken place. Arrangemen­ts have been entrusted to Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia and/or Saint Andrews United Church.
