Sun, some showers in long weekend forecast

Everyone has a different perspective on what is ideal weather for the Victoria Day long weekend.

In my opinion, this long weekend is not looking bad. A ridge of high-pressure will build into the region and bring summer-like temperatures to much of the region by Sunday.

But the placement of this ridge will put the jet stream just north of New Brunswick and through Labrador. This will allow weather fronts from low-pressure systems to swing through and keep things unsettled at times.

The weekend will feature variable cloudiness, with the most sunshine likely for Nova Scotia on Saturday and Sunday.

Prince Edward Island will have it’s most sun Saturday, Sunday and possibly the second half of Monday, while New Brunswick will see sun to start Saturday, on Sunday and, for some, on Monday.

Newfoundland will have it’s most sunshine on Saturday and, in Labrador, on Sunday.

It won’t be a total washout for most of us, but there will be varying chances of showers and a risk of thundershowers throughout the long weekend. This will be greatest over northern New Brunswick and Labrador Saturday to early Monday, but chances of showers for the rest of the region later Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Temperatures will also be on the rise, climbing into the high teens and low 20s on Saturday away from south-facing coastlines, where a breezy southerly wind will keep it cooler and soaring into the mid-to-high 20s in the Maritimes on Sunday away from those coasts.

It will remain warm for most on Victoria Day, but temperatures are forecast to fall back into the teens, with some low 20s possible.

Enjoy the weekend but keep an eye on the weather forecast or have radar handy.

And if thunder roars, head indoors.
