September 29, 1927 - February 23, 2024

-

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear mother, Helena Doris Poirier (Johnson) 96, at Hospice Halifax, Friday, February 23, 2024.

Born in Halifax September 29,1927 to Ruth (Purcell) and Benjamin Johnson. In 1937 her family moved from Halifax to Timberlea to a large farm on the shores of Governor's Lake. To a young city girl this was all very exciting. She attended the one room schoolhouse where she made life long friends, some of whom she remained in touch with until her final days. She married and raised a family of five. We have many cherished memories of family gatherings, grandchildren learning to swim in Nan’s pool, wonderful Christmas eve and other celebrations full of children, joy, laughter (always delicious food) and love of family.

Mom was a woman of strong faith, with a vibrant zest for life. A true matriarch who loved and cared for her family all her life. She was wise, independent, and strong willed. She had a beautiful sense of style and a great sense of humour. Remaining active and healthy well into her nineties. She enjoyed walking, golfing, bowling, curling, yoga, travel and playing cards with friends. She loved nature, animals and the ocean. With a strong family connection to the Prospect area, she loved drives to the little village by the ocean to reminisce.

Always interested in politics, she was convinced to run for municipal council and spent 15 years as Councillor, District 2 (Timberlea), County of Halifax, 1976-1991. She worked hard to best represent the constituents and community she loved.

She was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), the week of her 95th birthday. With the love and support of family, she remained in her own home for many months after her diagnosis before moving into Hospice Halifax, where she lived with the best of care. She looked for, and found the good in everyday. With a very sharp mind, she was able to fight her fight with much grace, dignity and courage. She continued to help guide her own care decisions until the end, often teaching a little something about life along the way.

Survived by her children; Katherine (Len), Christine, Kenneth (Irene), Rene (Germaine), Suzanne (Neil); ten grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Predeceased by parents, Ruth (Purcell) and Benjamin Johnson, brothers, Earl and Orland Johnson, husbands, Richard Poirier, followed by William Mccombs.

Thank you to family, neighbours and friends for all of your prayers, love, and support. To Doctor Scovil, in home caregivers, VON, Palliative care home team, ALS Society and all staff at Hospice Halifax, you are all such amazing, compassionate and caring professionals. She was so grateful for every one of you.

She lived and left on her own terms. Rest in eternal peace mom, you deserve it. We will love and miss you always.

Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. Liturgy of the Word will be held at St. Agnes RC Church, 6903 Mumford Road, Halifax on Tuesday, March 5th at 10 A.M.

Gathering to follow in the church hall. Private family burial, Mount Olivet Cemetery.
